"Motherhood is my favorite topic. In private! But publicly, I don't want to talk about it. Because I don't want to draw any extra attention to her. She didn't choose to be born into... You know. She deserves her anonymity! "

Isla Fisher Confesses
Filed in Online Interviews
Source: Teen Hollywood

She's that perky redhead hooked up with "Borat" (Sacha Baron Cohen). The couple have a baby daughter. Pretty Isla Fisher first caught our eye as the kookie, kinda desperate gal who glued herself to Vince Vaughn in the comedy Wedding Crashers. She was the right match for Scarlett Johansson's hubby Ryan Reynolds in the romantic Definitely, Maybe. Now you can identify with Isla (pronounced Eye-la) as a modern woman who is a bit overextended on her credit cards and still trying to hit the sales and hook up with her cute boss in Confessions of a Shopaholic, based on a popular novel.

In Isla's soft Aussie accent, we got the latest on shopping, comedy, fashion designers and dancing with Dancy (cute Hugh Dancy, her co-star). Picture the actress wearing a color that always looks great on a red-head... royal blue! Isla blew us away at our interview in her royal blue Zac Posen low-necked dress with short puffed sleeves. She accessorized with big copper dangle earrings and very high-heeled gladiator-style sandals in...orange! This gal knows how to stand out in a crowd!

TeenHollywood: What was the most fun fashion discovery you made while making this film?

Isla: The most fun fashion discovery was just to use a lot of color in my wardrobe. I am fairly conservative normally. And I just feel like Patricia Field (the movie's costume designer) just brought out the color in me. I now love to wear color.

TeenHollywood: Did you get to work with Patricia Field on selecting your outfits?

Isla: I did. Patricia was extremely collaborative. I only had one request which is I wanted Becky to wear extremely high heels so she could totter. I think there's nothing funnier than a comedic character tottering and the impracticality of wearing something that clearly doesn't fit her and is uncomfortable. But, she is a shopaholic so she has to have it. Patricia really is so creative. She did the costuming for Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada. So I kind of let go and let her guide me. I really enjoyed the process.

TeenHollywood: Is there anything in your closet you can't believe you bought?

Isla: Absolutely. I try to remove those items and give them to friends. Several times I have been suckered into a fashion that was not very flattering on a small frame. I am terrible with peer pressure. So once several shop assistants convince me that I look good, even though I can tell I don't, I will in fact make the purchase and live to regret it.

TeenHollywood: Can you comment on the theme of overboard economic consumption that seems to rule the world currently?

Isla: Well, obviously, this film was conceived during a different economic period. The lessons that Rebecca Bloomwood learns in the movie we have all been learning recently. So it feels really topical. I am proud of the way we handle that issue at the end of the movie.

TeenHollywood: You and Hugh Dancy have a really funny, sexy dance in which you flip around a fan. Is Hugh a good dancer?

Isla: I think he is a wonderful dancer. What I really loved about Hugh was that he came to the movie and took it seriously as if he was in a dramatic movie. Which is so important. As a result, he played the greatest straight man. It gave me, playing Becky Bloomwood, somewhere to go and to be more outrageous. The comedy was grounded in reality because of him. He brought so much integrity and heart to the film. And yes, he was a fantastic dancer. He remembered the more traditional moves far better than me. And sort of guided me through that scene. It has always been a comic dream of mine to attempt to seduce a man with a dance that is actually repulsive. So, the opportunity of doing that arose during this movie and I embraced it. I enjoyed every minute.

TeenHollywood: Were your moves choreographed or all your own?

Isla: No, no. They were ... I am embarrassed to admit .... all my own moves.

TeenHollywood: How did you develop a talent for physical comedy?

Isla: Well, actually, I trained at a theater school in Paris with a very famous clown. We focused on mime. So technically I learned the skill set. But personally, I have been someone who has loved to tap into their inner idiot. And I have always been the clown of my family. I have always enjoyed mucking about. I am just fortunate I get paid to do that.

TeenHollywood: What is your process for having a funny face for every scene? Do you practice in front of a mirror?

Isla: No. No. I just try to keep really loose and stay in the moment. Not have any sort of hope for what I am going to do. I am not a method actress. I just prepare at home and then no try to be self-conscious. A lot of people ask how I got into comedy. I think it is just because I am willing and a lot of actors and actresses are not willing to pull faces.

TeenHollywood: What item do you have a hard time not buying when you see it?

Isla: There is nothing really material I can't pass by. Maybe underwear, just out of necessity. Just in general, underwear. Not such a good look, not having underwear.

TeenHollywood: Have you ever had a moment where you have gotten a bill and went 'Oh my God' in shock?

Isla: Actually, recently, apparently someone had been buying petrol [gasoline] in Texas on my credit card. And I wasn't there. So I did have that experience, but not on my own.

TeenHollywood: What's your take on workplace romances? Your character is interested in her boss.

Isla: I think it works out very well for Rebecca Bloomwood in the story because Luke Brandon (Hugh's character) uncovers her voice and helps her be fulfilled. She doesn't realize how talented she is until she meets him. And for him, he learns to loosen up. That's why their relationship is so nice. They learn so much from each other. Personally, I am not a fan of romance in the workplace because you are stuck seeing someone every day.

TeenHollywood: Who are some of your favorite fashion designers?

Isla: Part of this business is the pageantry of red carpet. And you get dressed by incredible designers. I have to say I love Stella McCartney. I love Vivian Westwood. I love Zac Posen. I tend to go for more classic. I love Prada. I feel very blessed to wear any of those dresses.

TeenHollywood: You've said that you shop "rarely and poorly". So how do you fill up your closet?

Isla: Well, I do shop when I need to. I am fortunate in that I have sort of maintained my same size, except, obviously, when I was pregnant. So, I just tend to wear stuff that I have around. When I shop, I just get in and out. I have a mission and I fulfill it.

TeenHollywood: You are the female lead in this film. Can you talk about going from being a supporting player to the pressures of being the lead role?

Isla: Obviously, I am very surprised and eternally grateful to [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer and completely bewildered as to be chosen to have my own movie. I definitely felt far more responsible for the tone of the movie as a lead than you do as a supporting cast member where you can just come in and muck about. And on top of that, playing a beloved character from a book that is extraordinarily successful, and knowing that she is now going to be American, and wanting to just capture the essence of her properly added more pressure. Ultimately, when you have an incredible producer like Jerry Bruckheimer behind you and an amazing cast, it was just a rewarding, creative experience for me.

TeenHollywood: Your character Rebecca goes to a 'Spender's Anonymous' meeting. Did you research any 12 steps programs for the part?

Isla: I did actually. I went to 'Spender's Anonymous' and 'Over Spenders' groups. And it was fascinating. There are all styles and types of shopping: there's trophy shopping, image shopping, collecting, bulimic shopping. As funny as it sounds it is also very sad. I definitely learned a lot. It affects men as well as women. It was a fascinating experience.

TeenHollywood: Can you talk about the chaos of the Sample Sale where women just jump all over each other to get the sale item they want? Was that choreographed or did they just say 'go for it'?

Isla: No. We had to choreograph that. With all physical comedy you have to know where you are going to put cameras and insure no one gets trampled to death. So, we took it fairly seriously. There were a lot of heels on a very shiny surface. We just had a lot of fun with it. Ultimately we took it further. But we liked what we kept in the movie which is ending on her straddling the girl rather than pulling down a rack and being removed by a security guard.

TeenHollywood: Had you read the book before starting the project?

Isla: Yes, I was huge fan of the books. I had read them all long before I heard about the project. When I heard about the project and that Jerry Bruckheimer was producing, I didn't think in my wildest dreams I would even get a meeting let alone get the role. I literally still can not believe I got the role.

TeenHollywood: You wrote popular young adult novels early in your career. Have you read the 'Twilight' books?

Isla: No, I haven't read the 'Twilight' series but I'm very excited about it. I haven't actually seen the movie yet but I hear it's great!
